Guided drawing is an incredible art therapy, designed to alleviate pain and stress that is stored in the body as implicit memory. Akin to EMDR, it is an excellent trauma treatment that anyone can do. Trauma therapies like guided drawing and EMDR help both sides of the brain engage, allowing the trauma to become unstuck and lose its emotional power.
You don't need art skills to do guided drawing; just an open mind. Often called a "moving meditation" or "tai chi for the mind," it involves closing the eyes and using both hands to make bilateral movements with crayon, pastels, and paint. Guided drawing is a bottom-up approach that can help you develop a felt sense of emotion in the body, building a stronger mind-body connection.
I completed guided drawing training as a trauma therapy through The Institute of Sensorimotor Art Therapy, where I learned to guide people to find movements that soothe and integrate painful experiences.
Hour long guided drawing sessions are $180, including all art supplies.
